Dr. Nordt is a biophysical chemist with decades of laboratory experience and many scholarly publications in major scientific journals. His background also includes academic and industry work in the fields of colloid and surface chemistry, experimental and clinical biochemistry, and pharmacology.

Frank J. Nordt, Ph.D.

After earning his Ph.D. at the Oregon Health and Sciences University with a dissertation on surface chemistry of red blood cells, including rheological properties of blood, Dr. Nordt won a postdoctoral fellowship at the prestigious Max Planck Institut for Biochemistry near Munich, Germany. Upon completing his work at the Max Planck, Dr. Nordt accepted a research position at Sandoz (now Novartis), a major pharmaceutical company headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, where he explored potential pharmacological interventions for stroke. Recruited back to the United States by his alma mater, Dr. Nordt conducted research and taught at the OHSU before committing to the full-time operation of Rhein Consulting Laboratories in 1991.

Dr. Nordt has published extensively and is recognized internationally for his contributions to academic research, which he continues to undertake in collaboration with research teams from universities and the private sector worldwide. His reputation is unrivaled as the scientific thought leader in hormone profiling, analysis, interpretation, and clinical and research applications.

State-of-the-art hormone profiling utilizes gas chromatography coupled with unequivocal identification and quantification of steroids in urine sample via gas chromatography/triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC/MS/QQQ). (Liquid chromatography is unsuited for broad profiling, including analysis of neutral steroids.)

Healthcare professionals who recognize the importance of a complete assay depicting the delicate balance inherent in steroid hormone production and metabolism choose the 24-hour USHP test for their patients. Short-cut methods–such as mailing dried strips of urine-soaked paper–provide poor reproducibility and recoverability. Such methods are not clinically useful and may in fact lead to misdiagnosis and improper treatment.

Urine testing captures and measures a greater quantity of hormonal information than other types of testing. But the analysis and interpretation of those results is of crucial importance. Rhein Labs excels at correctly interpreting the complete range and complexity of hormonal production and interactions.

You will notice that Rhein Labs does not offer self-diagnostic quizzes for patients. Nor does Rhein Labs sell supplement products to patients who use quiz results to select products for their self-assessed hormonal imbalance needs.

The reason for this is simple: Rhein Labs believes that accurate, responsible assessment of hormonal status and related diagnoses can only be accomplished by medical professionals using the most thorough hormone profiling analysis and interpretation.

In adherence to rigorous ethical standards, Rhein Labs sells no products of any kind and does not market its services directly to patients.
